User Guide

This guide walks through every part of the VoiceOtaku experience so you can get the most out of every session.

The Main Screen

When you open VoiceOtaku you'll see a simple, focused interface. There are no menus, settings pages, or complex flows — the entire experience centres around a single call button.

Call Button

The large Start Call button is your entry point. Clicking it will:

  1. Request microphone permission (first time only)
  2. Join the queue if others are waiting
  3. Connect you directly if no one else is calling

During a Call

Speaking

Talk naturally, as you would to a person. VoiceOtaku is conversational, so you can:

  • Describe genres: "I love slice-of-life with a cosy feel"
  • Name shows you've enjoyed: "I liked Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood — what else would I like?"
  • State your mood: "I want something short and funny after a long day"
  • Ask for specifics: "Is there anything on Netflix with a good soundtrack?"

The Transcript

As you speak, your words appear on screen in real time. The AI's response also appears as text, so you can read along or refer back to what was said.

The Timer

Each call has a 2-minute time limit to keep the queue moving fairly. You'll see a countdown timer during your call. A warning appears when you have about 20 seconds remaining so you can wrap up.

When the time limit is reached, the call ends automatically. The queue is then cleared for the next person.

Ending the Call

There are three ways a call ends:

MethodDescription
Say goodbyeSay something like "thanks, goodbye" or "that's all" and the AI will close the session.
Recommendation completeWhen the AI finishes its recommendation, the call ends naturally.
Timer expiresAfter 2 minutes the session ends automatically.

After the call ends, you'll see a brief end screen summarising the conversation before returning to the main screen.

Choosing a Microphone

If you have multiple audio input devices (e.g., a headset and a built-in mic), you can choose which one to use before starting a call.

Click the microphone selector near the Start Call button. A dropdown will show all available devices. Select the one you want and then start your call.

See Microphone Setup for detailed instructions and troubleshooting.

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Speak clearly and at a normal pace. You don't need to shout or slow down artificially.
  • Be in a quiet environment if possible, to reduce background noise.
  • Be specific about what you like. The more detail you give, the better the recommendation.
  • Ask follow-ups. If the first suggestion doesn't resonate, say so: "I've already seen that. What else?"
  • Use headphones to prevent audio feedback if you notice the AI responding to its own voice.
